EDITORS COMMENTS

This print transports us back in time to the grandeur and elegance of The Ship Hotel, located on North Street in Chichester, West Sussex. As we gaze upon this image, our eyes are immediately drawn upwards through the central well of the hotel's Georgian staircase. A true architectural masterpiece, this spiral staircase is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail prevalent during that era. The photographer, Margaret F Harker, has skillfully captured every intricate element of this stunning staircase. From the ornate banisters adorned with delicate carvings to the meticulously crafted steps that seem to ascend endlessly into the heavens above - each aspect is brought to life through her lens. As we study this photograph further, we can almost imagine ourselves standing at its base and looking up towards an unseen destination. The play of light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the scene, enhancing our sense of awe as we contemplate both its beauty and historical significance. Through this image from Historic England's collection, we are reminded of how architecture can transport us across time and space. It serves as a reminder that even within modern society, there remains a deep appreciation for classical design principles such as those found within Georgian structures like The Ship Hotel's magnificent staircase.
