1880s Animals People Shop Shopping Urban Victorian Hardware Shop Shaving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Lower Richmond Road in Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The image captures the essence of urban life in the 1880s, showcasing a vibrant scene filled with shops and people going about their daily routines. In the foreground, we are drawn to Dyos's Platt alleyway, which leads our gaze towards St Mary's Church in the distance. This charming view along Lower Richmond Road (then known as Windsor Street) provides a glimpse into Victorian-era architecture and street design. As we explore this snapshot from history, our eyes are immediately drawn to the various shops lining both sides of the road. From a hardware shop to a decorators shop and even a tobacconist and hairdresser, these establishments were essential for meeting the needs of local residents during that time. Amidst all this activity on Lower Richmond Road, we notice an adorable dog strolling alongside its owner. Animals have always been an integral part of city life, providing companionship and adding charm to everyday scenes like this one. William O Field skillfully captured this moment in his Photographs of Putney series. Thanks to Dorian Gerhold and Michael Bull's efforts for compiling these photographs on behalf of Wandsworth Historical Society, we can now appreciate glimpses into bygone eras such as this one.
