1910s Building Site Church Construction Development Change Progress Renewal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Putney, Greater London. The focal point is St Mary's Church, standing tall amidst a construction site bustling with activity. Taken from the south east angle, the image showcases the church during a period of renewal and change in the 1910s. The surrounding land has been cleared to make way for the construction of Putney Bridge Bus Garage, an ambitious project that required demolishing Church Row and Gothic Villa. These structures once stood proudly to the south and east of St Mary's Church respectively but have now made room for progress. The photograph beautifully portrays both continuity and transformation. While St Mary's Church remains steadfast as a symbol of tradition and heritage, it stands juxtaposed against cranes, scaffolding, and building materials hinting at future development. William O Field skillfully captures this pivotal moment in time when old meets new. His lens freezes not only bricks-and-mortar changes but also echoes societal shifts taking place during this era. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, we are reminded of how cities evolve over time while still preserving their historical roots. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of progress without sacrificing our past.
