1880s Horse Drawn Transport Hotel Public House Urban Victorian Crossroads Delivery Drinking Fountain
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse of the past at the crossroads of Putney High Street, Putney Hill, and Upper Richmond Road in Greater London. In the foreground stands the old Railway Hotel, a historic establishment that dates back to 1857 but was later rebuilt in its current form during the late 1880s. The Fox and Hounds Hotel can be seen prominently on Upper Richmond Road, adding to the charm of this urban scene. As we delve into this image frozen in time, we notice that most of the buildings surrounding Putney Hill and Upper Richmond Road have since been demolished to make way for road widening projects. However, through William Fields's lens, we are able to appreciate their architectural beauty as they once stood proudly against an ever-changing cityscape. The presence of horse-drawn transport and delivery carts adds an authentic Victorian touch to this snapshot from the 1880s. A drinking fountain also catches our eye, serving as a reminder of simpler times when such amenities were essential for public use. This photograph is part of William O Field's collection titled "Photographs of Putney" curated by Dorian Gerhold and Michael Bull for the Wandsworth Historical Society. It offers us a fascinating window into history while showcasing both everyday life and notable landmarks from yesteryears' bustling streetscape.
