Holiday Home at Shoreham AL2397_012_01

Converted railway carriage holiday home, possibly at Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Silver gelatin DOP (developing out paper) print by an unknown photographer, 1920s. Holidaymakers pose on the verandah of their converted railway carriage holiday home. Between the wars, the freedom offered by the motor car and ambiguous planning regulations stimulated the creation of plotland developments in remote or undeveloped stretches of coastline and countryside. Shoreham Beach in West Sussex was one such development, and these photographs may have been taken there. Railway carriages, cheap to build shacks and bungalows were built or converted to be both holiday homes and more permanent dwellings. Plotland developments principally catered for the urban working class, but they also attracted artistic and bohemian folk, eager to find places free from conventional restrictions where open skies and dramatic changes in the weather could stimulate artistic creativity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Holiday Home at Shoreham AL2397_012_01" transports us back to the 1920s, a time when holidaymakers sought solace in unconventional retreats. The image showcases a converted railway carriage holiday home, nestled in what is believed to be Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. The verandah of this unique abode serves as the stage for a group of individuals posing with infectious joy. These holidaymakers exude an air of freedom and contentment that was emblematic of the era between the wars. It was during this time that motor cars became more accessible to the masses, enabling people to explore remote stretches of coastline and countryside like never before. Shoreham Beach in West Sussex emerged as one such plotland development - an enclave where ambitious planning regulations took a backseat. Railway carriages were ingeniously transformed into affordable shacks and bungalows that catered not only to the urban working class but also attracted bohemian souls seeking artistic inspiration amidst open skies and dramatic weather changes. This silver gelatin DOP print by an unknown photographer captures not just a moment frozen in time but also reflects on how these plotland developments offered respite from conventional restrictions. They provided havens where creativity could flourish under nature's watchful eye. Through this evocative photograph preserved by Historic England, we are reminded of an era when simplicity met ingenuity, paving the way for unconventional living spaces that continue to inspire even today.
