Kits Coty House under the Act AL2400 / 033 / 02

Kits Coty House, Aylesford, Kent. Attributed to Flaxman Charles John Spurrell (1842-1915). Silver gelatin DOP (developing out paper) print 1888. Flaxman Spurrells photograph album contains two photographs of Kits Coty House, the remains of a Neolithic long barrow and burial chamber. The first one, taken in 1880, shows the monument before the Ancient Monuments Protection Act in 1882 that recognised the need for a Government role in safeguarding the nations ancient monuments. The second, which Spurrell captioned Kitas Coty under The Act, was taken in 1888 and clearly shows the iron railings which now restricted public access and prevented further damage to the monument. Graffiti scratched into an upright and worn ground around the monument are evident in Spurrells photographs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Kits Coty House in Aylesford, Kent, under the protection of the Act AL2400 / 033 / 02. Attributed to Flaxman Charles John Spurrell, a renowned photographer from 1842-1915, this silver gelatin DOP print dates back to 1888. The image is part of Spurrell's remarkable photograph album that showcases two photographs of Kits Coty House. The first photograph, taken in 1880 before the implementation of the Ancient Monuments Protection Act in 1882, reveals the monument in its original state. This act recognized the significance of preserving our nation's ancient monuments and marked a turning point for government involvement in safeguarding these treasures. In contrast, the second photograph titled "Kits Coty under The Act" vividly depicts iron railings installed around Kits Coty House by 1888. These railings were put up to restrict public access and prevent further damage to this Neolithic long barrow and burial chamber. Flaxman Spurrell's keen eye also captured evidence of graffiti scratched into an upright stone and worn ground surrounding the monument. These details provide valuable insights into Victorian-era interactions with prehistoric sites like Kits Coty House. Preserved within Historic England's archives as part of their Picturing England collection, this print offers a fascinating glimpse into both our past and efforts made towards protecting our cultural heritage for future generations.
