Lands End House CC012271

Staircase at Lands End House, Beggars Hill Road, Charvil, Berkshire, 5 March 1935. Millar & Harris cellulose nitrate negative. The photographers make superlative use of light and shade to create an expressionistic view of the staircase at Lands End House. The house was built in 1935 and designed by architect Guy Morgan for the aircraft manufacturer Frederick George Miles. A full-height window at the front of the house lit this curved rubber-clad staircase. Millar & Harris had been established in 1912 as Millar & Stone, and became Millar & Harris in 1924. The firms extensive client base included architects such as Guy Morgan, estate agents Knight Frank & Rutley, and the construction company Mowlem. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the essence of a bygone era, showcasing the stunning staircase at Lands End House in Charvil, Berkshire. Taken on 5 March 1935 by photographers Millar & Harris, this cellulose nitrate negative showcases their exceptional use of light and shade to create an expressionistic view of the staircase. Designed by renowned architect Guy Morgan for Frederick George Miles, an aircraft manufacturer, Lands End House was a masterpiece of modern architecture when it was built in 1935. The photographers skillfully captured the beauty and elegance of this curved rubber-clad staircase that was bathed in natural light from a full-height window at the front of the house. Millar & Harris were well-established photographers with an impressive client base that included architects like Guy Morgan, estate agents Knight Frank & Rutley, and construction company Mowlem. Their expertise is evident in this photograph as they expertly showcase every intricate detail and highlight the play between light and shadow. This print serves as a remarkable testament to both architectural brilliance and photographic artistry. It transports us back to a time when grand staircases were not only functional but also works of art themselves. Historic England has preserved this image as part of their archive collection, allowing us to appreciate its historical significance for generations to come.
