Moor Platt GRE03_01_054

Moor Platt, Chorley Old Road, Horwich, Bolton, Greater Manchester. A group of women and children playing croquet on the lawn in front of Moor Platt.
The house, dating from the early 19th century, was demolished following a fire in the 1920s. It was built for Joseph Ridgway, the son of the founder of the local bleachworks, and passed through his heirs to the Howarth family. A later house, also known as Moor Platt now occupies the site

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Historic England Archive captures a moment in time at Moor Platt, Chorley Old Road, Horwich, Bolton, Greater Manchester. The image showcases a group of elegant women and playful children engrossed in a game of croquet on the lush green lawn in front of Moor Platt. Dating back to the early 19th century, this magnificent house was unfortunately destroyed by fire during the 1920s. Originally constructed for Joseph Ridgway, heir to the local bleachworks empire founded by his father, Moor Platt passed down through generations until it came into possession of the Howarth family. Today, another dwelling known as Moor Platt stands proudly on this historic site. The photograph offers us a glimpse into an era when croquet was considered one of society's favorite pastimes. Adorned in crinolines and exuding an air of affluence and prosperity, these women epitomize middle-class elegance. The gothic architecture adds to the grandeur of their surroundings while also reflecting their refined taste. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded not only of leisurely pursuits but also how history can be both fleeting and enduring. This image serves as a testament to the legacy left behind by those who once called Moor Platt home - their opulent lifestyle forever immortalized through photography thanks to Historic England Archive's dedication to preserving our heritage for future generations.
