Naval & Military Club, 94 Piccadilly, London BL05533

NAVAL AND MILITARY CLUB, 94 Piccadilly, St James s, Greater London. Exterior view from the street. The architect Matthew Brettingham designed this grandiose London mansion in the Palladian style. Begun in 1759, it is one of the few great London town houses still standing. Originally Egremont House, it later came to be known as Cholmondley House then Cambridge House. The Naval & Military Club acquired it after Lord Palmerstons death in 1865 and retained ownership until 1996. The club came to be known as the In and Out on account of the prominent signs on the gate piers. Photographed by Harry Bedford Lemere on the 26th February 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic presence of the Naval & Military Club, located at 94 Piccadilly in London. Designed by architect Matthew Brettingham in the Palladian style, this grandiose mansion stands as a testament to its historical significance. Dating back to 1759, it is one of the few remarkable town houses that have withstood the test of time in bustling London. Originally known as Egremont House, this architectural gem underwent various name changes including Cholmondley House and Cambridge House before being acquired by the Naval & Military Club after Lord Palmerston's demise in 1865. The club held ownership until 1996 and became affectionately known as "In and Out" due to prominent signs displayed on its gate piers. Photographed on February 26th, 1885 by Harry Bedford Lemere, this image beautifully showcases the exterior view from Piccadilly Street. The intricate details of its design are highlighted against a backdrop of Victorian charm. This photograph serves as a visual reminder of an era long gone but not forgotten. Preserved by Historic England and brought to life through Bedford Lemere's lens, this print allows us to appreciate both the architectural brilliance and historical significance associated with one of London's great landmarks. It invites us to delve into a world where elegance meets tradition, leaving us captivated by its timeless beauty.
