Reculver Towers OP00670

RECULVER TOWERS, Kent. The remains of the west facade of St Marys church stands on the cliff at Reculver. The original 7th century church was built on the site of an abandoned fort. In 1809 most of the church was pulled down, but the 12th century towers, known locally as the twin sisters, were retained as a navigational aid. When the original spires were destroyed by a storm c.1819, they were replaced with similar shaped, open structures containing weather vanes (they were removed c.1930). Photographed by W and Co. between 1890 - 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Reculver Towers, standing proudly on the cliff in Kent. The remnants of St Mary's church's west facade serve as a poignant reminder of its rich history. Originally built in the 7th century atop an abandoned fort, this church has witnessed centuries of change and transformation. In 1809, much of the church was dismantled, but the iconic twin sisters - two magnificent 12th-century towers - were preserved as a vital navigational aid for seafarers. However, nature had other plans when a fierce storm ravaged their original spires around 1819. Undeterred by adversity, these resilient structures were adorned with new open designs housing weather vanes that graced their summits until approximately 1930. The photograph itself is a testament to W and Co. 's artistry between 1890 and 1910. It beautifully captures the medieval charm emanating from these historic towers while showcasing their architectural grandeur against the backdrop of rolling cliffs and vast skies. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness both human ingenuity and Mother Nature's power intertwining within one frame. This print encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as an homage to our ancestors' craftsmanship and resilience that still stands tall today at Reculver Towers.
