EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken in August 2006 by Damian Grady for Historic England, captures the historic Alexandra Palace in Muswell Hill, London. Built in 1873, Alexandra Palace was designed as a North London counterpart to Crystal Palace in Sydenham, South London, offering public recreation, education, and entertainment. Set amidst the expansive Alexandra Park, the palace featured a concert hall, art galleries, a museum, lecture hall, and a theatre. Over the years, Alexandra Palace has played a significant role in the development of broadcasting technology. In 1936, it became the television headquarters of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), marking the beginning of regular television broadcasting in the UK. The iconic BBC radio mast, still in use today, can be seen towering over the palace in this image. The Victorian architecture of Alexandra Palace, with its red-tiled roofs and ornate details, stands in stark contrast to the modern television equipment and antennas that surround it. This photograph offers a unique perspective on the rich history of this London landmark, showcasing its evolution from a grand Victorian edifice to a pioneering broadcasting center.
