BULL RING CENTRE, BULL RING, BIRMINGHAM, WEST MIDLANDS. Dignitaries touring stalls during the official opening of the retail market at the Bull Ring Centre.
On 14th November 1963, the retail market at the Bull Ring development was opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Alderman Dr. Louis Glass, JP. The new retail market replaced the old Market Hall building, which was originally built in 1835 but had suffered serious damage from an air strike in the Second World War. The general section of the new market housed 154 stalls, with a further 42 in the separate fish and poultry section. The dignitaries shown in the photograph are Lord Mayor of Birmingham, the Lady Mayoress, and Councillor Mrs Nan Smith, Chairman of the Markets and Fairs Committee

This print captures the excitement and grandeur of the opening day at Bull Ring Centre in Birmingham, West Midlands. The year was 1963, and dignitaries were seen touring the bustling stalls during this momentous occasion. Led by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Alderman Dr. Louis Glass, JP, these esteemed guests marveled at the new retail market that replaced the old Market Hall building. The original Market Hall had a rich history dating back to 1835 but sadly suffered severe damage from an air strike during World War II. However, with its replacement came a fresh start for commerce in Birmingham. The general section alone housed an impressive 154 stalls, while an additional 42 were dedicated to fish and poultry.
