Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Greater London. Taken from an elevated view, the image showcases the dedication and hard work put into building this new teaching hospital. Laing Management Contracting played a crucial role in bringing this project to life on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The hospital was constructed on the grounds where St Stephens Hospital once stood before being demolished earlier that year. The use of innovative fast track construction techniques allowed for the completion of this ambitious project in less than five years. This impressive feat highlights both the efficiency and expertise involved in creating such a vital healthcare facility. Finally, on May 13,1993, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital was officially opened by none other than Queen Elizabeth herself, marking a momentous occasion for both the local community and medical professionals alike. This photograph not only serves as a testament to human ingenuity but also stands as a reminder of how progress can transform urban landscapes. The cranes towering over the site symbolize hope for improved healthcare services while showcasing London's ever-evolving skyline. Historic England Archive has preserved this snapshot of history, allowing us to reflect upon an era when modern medicine took shape amidst bustling construction sites like these.
