In the early 1980s plans were developed for a modern hospital to replace the old Dorchester Hospital, at a new site to the west of the town centre. A joint venture of Laings South West Region and Haden Young Limited were responsible for Phase I of the construction project, which was to provide 149 beds and included maternity and geriatric units, two operating theatres and a pathology and X-ray department. Phase I on the north part of the new site was completed in the late 1980s under the name West Dorset County Hospital. When Phase II on the south part of the site was completed in the mid 1990s, the whole site became known as Dorset County Hospital

This print captures a glimpse into the past at West Dorset County Hospital in the 1980s. The image showcases a corridor adorned with an exquisite suspended ceiling, adding an element of elegance to the hospital's interior design. During this time, plans were underway to replace the old Dorchester Hospital with a modern facility located west of the town center. Phase I of construction was led by Laings South West Region and Haden Young Limited, resulting in a state-of-the-art hospital that boasted 149 beds, including specialized units for maternity and geriatric care. Additionally, two operating theaters and a pathology and X-ray department were incorporated into this initial phase. The completion of Phase II in the mid-1990s marked the transformation of both parts of the site into what is now known as Dorset County Hospital. This significant expansion further enhanced healthcare services available to residents in West Dorset.
