MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. A view of an operating theatre in the new surgical block at Mayday Hospital, taken from an anaesthetic room.
This image was taken on the handover day for Phase I of the hospital redevelopment project. It was published in the January-February 1983 issue of Laings monthly newsletter, Team Spirit.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The Laing Phase I contract was awarded by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority and was to be carried out over a period of three years, with work starting in 1979. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The Laing contract also included the provision of a new road between the site and London Road, car parks, and other ancillary buildings. The new surgical block had twelve wards providing approximately 330 beds, operating theatres, an intensive therapy unit, an adult day care unit, and other staff facilities. The services block housed a kitchen, staff dining room, goods reception and distribution centre, and further plant areas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the history of Mayday Hospital, London. Taken from an anaesthetic room, the image showcases the brand new operating theatre in the hospital's recently completed surgical block. The photograph was taken on the handover day for Phase I of the hospital redevelopment project, marking a significant milestone in this multi-million pound endeavor. Laings Southern Region, awarded with the prestigious contract by South West Thames Regional Health Authority, undertook this ambitious three-year project starting in 1979. The scope of their work included constructing a state-of-the-art three-storey surgical block connected to the main hospital complex by a bridge. Additionally, Laing provided essential infrastructure such as car parks and ancillary buildings along with a new road connecting to London Road. The newly built surgical block boasted twelve wards accommodating around 330 beds alongside cutting-edge operating theatres and an intensive therapy unit. It also housed an adult day care unit and various staff facilities to ensure optimal patient care. Published in Laings' monthly newsletter "Team Spirit" in January-February 1983, this remarkable image serves as a testament to both architectural excellence and medical advancement achieved through collaborative efforts between industry leaders like Laings Southern Region and Mayday Hospital. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, it stands as a reminder of how dedication and innovation can transform healthcare facilities for generations to come.
