1960s Construction Flats Housing Estate People Work Asphalt Bitumen Bucket Roofers Roofing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic Doddington Estate in Battersea, Wandsworth. Two dedicated workers can be seen meticulously asphalting the roof of one of the block of flats, showcasing their expertise and commitment to creating a sturdy and reliable structure. Designed by renowned architects Emberton, Tardrew & Partners, this housing estate stands as a testament to innovative architectural practices during its time. Built between 1967-1971 by Laing for Wandsworth London Borough Council, it utilized the cutting-edge 12M Jespersen building system. This method involved prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels produced at Laing's concrete factory in Andover. The image exudes an air of industriousness as these skilled roofers work diligently under steam-filled buckets containing bitumen asphalt. Their synchronized movements reflect not only their proficiency but also their dedication towards constructing high-quality homes for future residents. This photograph is a valuable piece from A© Historic England Archive that encapsulates both the essence of construction work in the 1960s and the significance of architectural advancements during that era. It serves as a reminder of how human ingenuity combined with hard work can shape our built environment into something remarkable.
