EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment during the construction of the iconic Second Severn Crossing. The image showcases the joining deck units, specifically JLP01_11_60071_08, as they await connection to bridge the gap between Wales and England. Taken from atop a bridge pylon, this westward view highlights the vast expanse of space eagerly awaiting completion. The Second Severn Crossing project was an impressive feat of civil engineering collaboration between Laing Civil Engineering and French company GTM. Spanning over 5000 meters across the majestic River Severn, this cable-stayed bridge took four years to construct before its grand opening ceremony on June 5th, 1996. Situated just three miles downstream from its predecessor, the Severn Bridge which opened in 1966, this new crossing served as a vital link for motorists traveling along the M4 Motorway. Its strategic location at New Passage in South Gloucestershire played a crucial role in connecting communities and facilitating smoother transportation between two nations. This remarkable photograph not only encapsulates a significant milestone in British infrastructure history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It stands as an enduring symbol of progress and connectivity that has benefited countless individuals since its completion in the vibrant decade of the 1990s.
