EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment during the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, showcasing the intricate process of joining deck units. The image provides a mesmerizing view looking east along the bridge's deck, with cables elegantly supporting its structure. The dedication and precision required for such an engineering feat are evident as workers diligently carry out their tasks to seamlessly connect each unit. The Second Severn Crossing project was a remarkable collaboration between Laing Civil Engineering and French company GTM, spanning four years from April 1992 to its grand opening on June 5th, 1996. This cable-stayed bridge stretches over an impressive distance of 5000 meters across the majestic River Severn, serving as a vital link between England and Wales. It is worth noting that this iconic crossing is situated just three miles downstream from the historic Severn Bridge, which had been operational since 1966. Together, these two structures symbolize human ingenuity and progress in civil engineering throughout different eras. This evocative photograph not only showcases the immense scale of this construction endeavor but also serves as a testament to human ambition and innovation in creating infrastructure that connects nations. It stands as a timeless reminder of our ability to overcome geographical barriers through visionary engineering solutions.
