M6 Motorway, M6, Tebay, Eden, Cumbria. A view of the construction of the M6 Motorway through the Lune Gorge at Borrowbeck Viaduct, looking up at bridge beams being launched across the gorge by a large gantry above.
The work on the Lune Gorge section of the M6 Motorway between Killington and Tebay (Junction 37 - Junction 38) was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. Work started in October 1967 and the motorway was opened to traffic in October 1970. On this stretch of the M6, 20 bridges and 17 culverts were built across rivers and streams. The motorway viaduct is located at grid reference NY in Low Borrowbridge just to the west of a Victorian railway viaduct

1960s Bridge Civil Engineering Construction Motorway Road Scaffolding Viaduct

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring construction of the M6 Motorway through the picturesque Lune Gorge at Borrowbeck Viaduct in Cumbria. The image showcases a remarkable view from below, as massive bridge beams are being launched across the gorge by a towering gantry above. The ambitious project was undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd. , with work commencing in October 1967 and culminating in the opening of this section of the motorway to traffic in October 1970. Spanning between Killington and Tebay (Junction 37 - Junction 38), this stretch required the creation of an impressive network consisting of 20 bridges and 17 culverts that gracefully traverse rivers and streams. Located at grid reference NY6084201447 in Low Borrowbridge, just west of a Victorian railway viaduct, this motorway viaduct stands as a testament to exceptional civil engineering prowess. The intricate scaffolding visible in the photograph serves as a reminder of the meticulous planning and execution involved in such monumental infrastructure projects. This evocative image is part of Historic England Archive's collection, providing us with a glimpse into our nation's history during an era defined by progress and innovation. It invites viewers to marvel at both human ingenuity and nature's grandeur intertwined harmoniously within this iconic piece of road infrastructure.
