M6 Motorway, M6, Madeley, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. A view of the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), looking south-east at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath, showing excavation vehicles working beside a stream.
The work on the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), between junctions J13 to J16 started in June 1960 and was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. This section at Waltons Wood presented geological problems for the construction team with an embankment failing when severe slipping occurred in 1961. By October 1963, remedial works on the embankment were completed. Water from the stream shown in the photograph was contained within a 1, 000 foot long culvert and extensive drainage schemes were also constructed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic M6 Motorway, specifically at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath in Staffordshire. Taken in the 1960s by A© Historic England Archive, this image showcases excavation vehicles diligently working alongside a serene stream. The Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) project commenced in June 1960 and was undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd. However, this particular section presented unique challenges due to geological complications. In 1961, severe slipping caused an embankment failure, necessitating remedial works that were completed by October 1963. One can't help but marvel at the engineering prowess required to contain water from the stream within a massive culvert measuring over 1,000 feet long. Additionally, extensive drainage schemes were implemented to ensure smooth functionality of this vital transportation artery. This photograph not only documents an important phase of civil engineering history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It reminds us of the immense effort put forth by countless individuals who dedicated their skills and expertise towards creating modern infrastructure that continues to benefit generations today. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us appreciate both the beauty of nature juxtaposed with man-made progress—a reminder that even amidst construction chaos lies harmony waiting to be discovered.
