EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Stafford/Wolverhampton railway bridge (Bridge 302) on Section A of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6). Taken during the 1960s, it showcases a dedicated Laing worker diligently carrying out surveying work amidst the bustling construction site. The Birmingham to Preston Motorway project, undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd. , commenced in June 1960 and spanned from junctions J13 to J16. Section A, which extended for 51/4 miles between Dunston and Whitgreave, was a crucial part of this ambitious endeavor. The image provides an intriguing glimpse into the meticulous planning and execution required for such a massive infrastructure project. The surveyor can be seen meticulously measuring and documenting various aspects of the landscape as he contributes to shaping this vital transportation link. With its focus on both people and machinery at work, this photograph perfectly encapsulates not only the technical aspects but also highlights human effort involved in constructing major roadways. It serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise exhibited by workers like these throughout history. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this remarkable snapshot offers us an invaluable window into our past. It reminds us of how far we have come in terms of engineering marvels while honoring those who played pivotal roles in their creation.
