WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Watneys dray horses eating from nosebags during the celebration for the opening of the Westway Flyover.
Work on site for the Western Avenue Extension began on the 1st September 1966 and the Westway as it became known was officially opened on the 28th July 1970. The elevated highway connecting the A40 at White City to Marylebone Road in Paddington, at around 2 miles was the longest in Europe. The construction was organised into six sections. Sections 1, 4, 5 & 6 formed the main flyover into central London with Sections 2 & 3 being the West Cross Route running south from the junction in Section 1 near Latimer Road to Shepherds Bush. This photograph was taken near grid reference TQ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment during the celebration for the opening of the Westway Flyover in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. The image showcases Watneys dray horses indulging in their well-deserved meal from nosebags as they take part in the festivities. The Westway Flyover, officially opened on July 28th, 1970, was an engineering marvel of its time. Stretching over two miles, it became Europe's longest elevated highway connecting White City to Paddington. The construction process was meticulously organized into six sections, with Sections 1,4,5 & 6 forming the main flyover into central London and Sections 2 & 3 comprising the West Cross Route. In this particular photograph taken near grid reference TQ2357681100, we witness not only the impressive infrastructure but also a glimpse into everyday life during that era. People can be seen going about their day while children are captivated by these magnificent creatures. It is a testament to both human ingenuity and our connection with animals that even amidst such grandeur and progress, we find solace in simple moments like horses enjoying their meals. This image serves as a reminder of how history intertwines with nature and how seemingly ordinary scenes can hold profound significance.
