Constructing Reactor 1 JLP01_01_074_10

BERKELEY POWER STATION, BERKELEY, HAM AND STONE, STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. A view over Reactor No.1 during the construction of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station, showing the jib for the 10 ton Scotch Derrick being lifted in to place for the erection of the Monotower Crane, with the Monotower foundation on the right of the foreground.
Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom and one of the first generation of nuclear reactors in Britain. It had two Magnox reactors and was one of four stations located close to the mouth of the River Severn and the Bristol Channel. Laing were the civil engineers for the project with work commencing on 7th January 1957. The nuclear power station came into service in 1962 but has since been decommissioned following its closure in 1989

1950s Construction Nuclear Power Station

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the construction of Reactor No. 1 at Berkeley Nuclear Power Station in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. Taken during the 1950s, it showcases the meticulous process involved in erecting this groundbreaking facility. In the foreground, we see the foundation of the Monotower Crane, symbolizing progress and innovation. The jib for the 10-ton Scotch Derrick is being carefully lifted into place by skilled workers, highlighting their dedication and expertise. This intricate operation was crucial for assembling the Monotower Crane, which played a vital role in constructing Reactor No. 1. Berkeley Nuclear Power Station holds immense historical significance as it was not only Britain's first commercial nuclear power station but also one of its earliest nuclear reactors. Designed with two Magnox reactors, this pioneering facility stood near the River Severn and Bristol Channel. The project commenced on January 7th, 1957 under Laing civil engineers' guidance. After years of hard work and determination from countless individuals involved in its construction, Berkeley Nuclear Power Station finally came into service in 1962. Although now decommissioned since its closure in 1989, this powerful image serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of technological advancement and energy exploration during an era defined by scientific breakthroughs. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection thanks to A© Joh photographer's keen eye for detail and historical preservation efforts.
