BERKELEY POWER STATION, BERKELEY, HAM AND STONE, STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. A view showing progress on the excavation of Reactor No.2 during the construction of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station.
Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom and one of the first generation of nuclear reactors in Britain. It had two Magnox reactors and was one of four stations located close to the mouth of the River Severn and the Bristol Channel. Laing were the civil engineers for the project with work commencing on 7th January 1957. The nuclear power station came into service in 1962 but has since been decommissioned following its closure in 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station, showcasing the excavation progress on Reactor No. 2. Located in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, this power station holds historical importance as the first commercial nuclear facility in the United Kingdom and one of Britain's pioneering reactors. The image showcases an impressive view of the construction site, with an excavator diligently at work alongside a dump truck. The magnitude of this project becomes evident as we witness the scale and complexity involved in building such a groundbreaking facility. Laing, renowned civil engineers, undertook this monumental task starting from January 7th, 1957. Five years later, in 1962, Berkeley Nuclear Power Station commenced its operations and played a vital role in meeting Britain's growing energy demands for several decades until its closure in 1989. Situated near the mouth of River Severn and Bristol Channel along with three other stations, Berkeley harnessed two Magnox reactors to generate electricity efficiently. Although now decommissioned after faithfully serving its purpose for many years, this photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancements during that era. Preserved by Historic England Archive under A© license from Joh (not mentioning any company), this image not only offers us insight into our past but also reminds us of our continuous pursuit towards cleaner energy sources for future generations.
