Perronet Thompson School JLP01_10_36846

Perronet Thompson School, Wawne Road, Bransholme, City of Kingston upon Hull. A view of the south end of Perronet Thompson School looking across the playground.
Laings Yorkshire Region division began work on site in September 1986 and the building was completed in June 1988. Bransholme was one of the largest local authority housing estates in Britain at the time and the school was equipped with enhanced facilities for the use of the whole community. These included the larger lending library, the Bransholme Theatre, meetings rooms, a gymnasium and courtyard tearooms. The school was named for the Kingston upon Hull born parliamentarian Thomas Perronet Thompson (1783-1869), a governor of Sierra Leone and activist against the Corn Laws. It closed in 1999 and reopened as Kingswood College of Arts but was demolished in 2011 and replaced on the same site by a new building, the Kingswood Academy

1980s Angular Education School Secondary School

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Perronet Thompson School in all its grandeur. Located on Wawne Road in Bransholme, City of Kingston upon Hull, this educational institution was a prominent landmark within one of Britain's largest local authority housing estates during the 1980s. The image showcases the south end of Perronet Thompson School, providing a picturesque view across its expansive playground. Built by Laings Yorkshire Region division between September 1986 and June 1988, this architectural marvel boasted enhanced facilities that catered not only to students but also to the wider community. These amenities included a lending library, Bransholme Theatre, meeting rooms, gymnasium, and courtyard tearooms. Named after Thomas Perronet Thompson (1783-1869), an influential parliamentarian hailing from Kingston upon Hull who fought against the oppressive Corn Laws and served as a governor of Sierra Leone, this school held great historical significance. Although it closed its doors in 1999 and later reopened as Kingswood College of Arts before ultimately being demolished in 2011, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the school's rich heritage. With its symmetrical design featuring angular wings stretching towards the sky, it stands as a testament to both architectural excellence and educational progress.
