EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in British history - the opening of Coryton Refinery. Taken on Thursday 27th May 1954, this image showcases the ceremonial event where Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was presented to Mrs J. W. Laing at the refinery's grand inauguration. The picture transports us back to that significant day as we witness the majestic steam launch, St Katharine, sailing from Tower Bridge Pier in London's Port of Authority. The Queen Mother embarked on this vessel before arriving at Coryton for an exclusive tour of the refinery. As she explored every corner of this state-of-the-art facility, it is evident that great attention was paid to detail and efficiency in its design and construction. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, a bronze tablet was unveiled by Her Majesty herself in the Cafeteria Building. This photograph not only highlights an important milestone for Coryton Oil Refinery but also provides a glimpse into Britain's thriving oil industry during the 1950s. It symbolizes progress, innovation, and national pride. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this image serves as a reminder of our industrial heritage and reminds us of how far we have come since then. Let it transport you back to a time when ceremony met royalty against a backdrop of engineering marvels and burgeoning industry.
