1950s Building Site Cathedral Construction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1950s, capturing a pivotal moment in the construction of Coventry Cathedral. The image showcases the complete outline of the cathedral foundations, offering a glimpse into the intricate process of building this iconic structure. Looking north over the construction site, we are immediately drawn to the central section where walls are being erected for the Sacristy, seamlessly connecting with the west wall of the Cathedral. Our eyes then follow towards a central duct that is being constructed to connect with the boiler house, highlighting both functionality and design. Moving further eastwards, we witness two Hallowing Places (Nos. 4 and 5) taking shape alongside Provosts Vestry as they contribute to completing the majestic east wall of Coventry Cathedral. It's fascinating to observe how each element gradually comes together like pieces of an architectural puzzle. The photo also captures an intriguing detail - as if frozen in time - showing how slowly but surely, piece by piece, slab by slab, the nave floor creeps forward towards its ultimate destination near the boiler house. This remarkable snapshot from A© Historic England Archive allows us to appreciate not only Coventry Cathedral's grandeur but also pays homage to all those involved in its creation. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in bringing forth such an awe-inspiring place of worship.
