New Cathedral rising JLP01_01_026_25

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A view from the north-east showing the north and east walls of Coventry Cathedral during its construction, with the old cathedral and Holy Trinity Church in the background.
Following the bombing of Coventry Cathedral in November 1940, a competition was launched in 1950 to find a design for a new cathedral. The winning design was by Sir Basil Spence (1907-1976) from one of over 200 designs submitted. Building work took place between the mid-1950s and 1962. Queen Elizabeth II laid the foundation stone on 23th March 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of Coventry Cathedral rising from its construction site in the 1950s. The image showcases the north and east walls of the cathedral, which were being meticulously built after the devastating bombing that occurred in November 1940 during World War II. In the background, one can glimpse remnants of the old cathedral and Holy Trinity Church, serving as a poignant reminder of what was lost. After launching a competition in 1950 to find an innovative design for a new cathedral, Sir Basil Spence emerged victorious among over 200 submissions with his visionary concept. Construction work commenced in the mid-1950s and concluded in 1962, culminating in this remarkable architectural masterpiece that stands as a symbol of resilience and hope. The significance of this momentous occasion is further highlighted by Queen Elizabeth II herself laying the foundation stone on March 23rd, 1956. This historic event marked not only royal endorsement but also emphasized the national importance placed on rebuilding Coventry's spiritual heart. Through this evocative photograph by A© Historic England Archive, viewers are transported back to witness an extraordinary chapter in history when determination triumphed over destruction. It serves as a testament to human perseverance and creativity while honoring those who dedicated their skills and efforts to resurrecting Coventry Cathedral into an enduring symbol of peace and unity.
