Graythorp, Hartlepool. A bird s-eye view of the oil platform Graythorp II and a large crowd of people gathered for its naming ceremony at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. The oil platform Graythorp I was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974 and on the weekend of 14th-15th June 1975, Graythorp II was named and floated out of the dock basin down the Seaton Channel to where it was handed over to its owners BP. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the history of marine engineering. The image showcases the impressive oil rig Graythorp II, standing tall and proud against the backdrop of Hartlepool's Graythorp fabrication yard. From a bird's-eye view, we witness a large crowd of people gathered for its grand naming ceremony. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore embarked on an ambitious project to construct a dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. This facility became instrumental in building fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's groundbreaking North Sea Oil Project. On that fateful day, Saturday 29th June 1974, Graythorp I was launched into the waters with great fanfare. The excitement continued to reverberate through time as Graythorp II took center stage during its own unveiling weekend on 14th-15th June 1975. As this magnificent structure floated out of the dock basin down Seaton Channel, it marked yet another milestone in offshore exploration and production. This photograph not only immortalizes these significant events but also pays homage to all those involved in bringing these colossal structures to life. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in harnessing our natural resources for progress and innovation.
