Parts for an oil platform JLP01_10_01079A
Graythorp, Hartlepool. A part being transported by barge to the dock at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of oil exploration. The image showcases parts for an oil platform being transported by barge to the dock at Graythorp, Hartlepool in the early 1970s. Laing Pipelines Offshore, during this time, constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project took place at this very location. With one thousand dedicated men working tirelessly on-site by 1972, they were tasked with building a tubular structure that would ultimately support a drilling rig destined for the Forties Oilfield in the North Sea. The photograph beautifully encapsulates both industrial prowess and maritime ingenuity as it features a watercraft transporting these crucial components towards their final destination. It serves as a testament to human determination and innovation during an era when offshore oil exploration was rapidly expanding. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this remarkable snapshot offers us a glimpse into our past and reminds us of how far we have come in harnessing natural resources to fuel our modern world.
