NORFOLK. A man passing a sandbag to a diver in the River Nar at a point where the Fens gas pipeline crosses the river.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the construction of the Fens gas pipeline. The image showcases a diver, clad in scuba gear, submerged in the tranquil waters of the River Nar. With unwavering focus, he reaches out to receive a sandbag being passed to him by a man standing on the riverbank. The significance of this scene lies in its representation of teamwork and collaboration amidst challenging circumstances. As part of a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM), over 600 dedicated men worked tirelessly on this ambitious project. Their mission was to lay 36-inch diameter steel pipes that would connect West Winch in Norfolk with Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. Spanning four rivers, as well as numerous dykes and ditches, this feat required immense skill and precision. The diver's role becomes even more apparent when considering his task: ensuring that the pipeline successfully crosses the River Nar. Beyond its technical aspects, this photograph also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It encapsulates an era when North Sea gas was becoming increasingly vital for energy supply across Britain. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into an important chapter of engineering history - one where people came together to shape our nation's infrastructure for generations to come.
