Gas pipeline JLP01_08_076811
NORFOLK. A view of the Fens gas pipeline, showing protective canopies located at joints along the pipe where sub welds were carried out.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Fens gas pipeline in all its engineering glory. The image showcases the meticulous attention to detail, with protective canopies strategically placed at joints along the pipe where sub welds were carried out. The Fens gas pipeline project, initiated in June 1967, was a remarkable joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. It involved over 600 dedicated men who worked tirelessly to lay 36-inch diameter steel pipes that stretched from West Winch in Norfolk to Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. As we delve into this historical moment frozen in time, it is awe-inspiring to witness how this monumental structure crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches. This feat of engineering prowess not only connected regions but also facilitated the transportation of vital North Sea gas. The photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration on an unprecedented scale. It reminds us of our ability to conquer challenges through determination and innovation. A© Historic England Archive has beautifully captured this iconic symbol of progress, reminding us of our past achievements while inspiring future generations towards even greater accomplishments.
