This print captures the momentous launch of the Northcoates pipeline in East Lindsey, Lincolnshire. From the shoreline, we are granted a breathtaking view of this engineering marvel taking shape. The image showcases an array of lifting equipment at work, including a floating sheerleg that adds to the grandeur of the scene. The construction project for this oil pipeline was a collaborative effort between Laing Pipelines and French companies Entrepose and GTM. Additionally, Dredging and Construction Company, along with Adriaan Volker of Rotterdam, played a crucial role as main contractors for the dredging work involved. On 16th June 1970, history was made as over two miles of concrete-encased pipeline with a diameter measuring 36 inches were meticulously pulled out to sea in the Humber Estuary. This remarkable feat not only showcased groundbreaking civil engineering techniques but also marked a significant milestone in securing oil supply during that era. Preserved within this print is an extraordinary testament to human ingenuity and perseverance from decades past. It serves as a reminder of our ability to conquer challenges through collaboration and innovation. Let us cherish such moments captured by Historic England Archive's lens as they continue to inspire future generations in their pursuit of progress and excellence.
