1970s Civil Engineering Construction Pipeline
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the launch site of the Northcoates pipeline in North Cotes, East Lindsey, Lincolnshire. The foreground showcases the sturdy and reliable lifting gear and buoys provided by Laing Pipelines, while in the background, one can witness the impressive pipeline itself along with other essential lifting equipment. The civil engineering work on this ambitious project was a collaborative effort between Laing Pipelines and French companies Entrepose and GTM. Additionally, Dredging and Construction Company, together with Adriaan Volker of Rotterdam, took charge of the crucial dredging work required for this venture. A remarkable feat of engineering from 1970s Britain is highlighted here as over two miles of concrete-encased 36-inch diameter pipeline were successfully pulled out to sea in the Humber Estuary on June 16th. This significant achievement played a vital role in ensuring a steady supply of oil to meet growing demands during that era. Preserved within this image is not just an industrial marvel but also a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration across borders. It serves as a reminder that even decades ago, innovative solutions were sought after to address complex challenges related to oil supply. This print from Historic England Archive allows us to glimpse into our past's technological advancements while appreciating how far we have come since then.
