EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a serene view along a stretch of the Mersey oil pipeline in the picturesque rolling countryside. The image showcases the pipeline after skilled welders have meticulously passed through, leaving behind their mark on this engineering marvel. However, before the joints are coated, we get a glimpse of its raw state against the backdrop of nature's beauty. Installed in 1967 by Laing Civil Engineering in collaboration with French companies Entrepose and Grands Trevaux de Marseille (GTM), the Mersey oil pipeline spans an impressive 88 miles. Its purpose is to connect Ellesmere Port to the Kingsbury Oil Terminal, serving as a vital link for transporting oil to fuel the Midlands region. Published in November 1967 within Laing's monthly newsletter "Team Spirit" this photograph offers us a rare insight into one of England's significant civil engineering achievements from that era. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration across borders. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this snapshot not only highlights technical prowess but also reminds us of our ability to harmoniously integrate industrial infrastructure into our natural surroundings. As we admire this historical artifact today, let it serve as inspiration for future generations tasked with balancing progress and environmental stewardship.
