Pipeline launch JLP01_08_084521
North Cotes, East Lindsey, Lincolnshire. An aerial view of the launch site of the Northcoates pipeline, showing the pipeline, a cofferdam, floating sheerleg with accompanying tug and a header barge.
The civil engineering work on the Northcoates oil pipeline was carried out by Laing Pipelines along with French companies Entrepose and GTM, and the main contractor for the dredging work was Dredging and Construction Company along with Adriaan Volker of Rotterdam. The launch of the pipeline took place at 12.30 on 16th June 1970 and took 3hrs to complete. At this time, it was the largest sea pipeline to be placed off the British coast. This photograph was published in July 1970 in the Laing monthly newsletter Team Spirit. EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures the historic moment of the launch of the Northcoates pipeline in Lincolnshire, England. The image showcases a remarkable display of engineering prowess and collaboration between British and French companies during the 1970s. The photo reveals an expansive view of the launch site, where the impressive pipeline stretches across the landscape. A cofferdam, used to create a dry working area for construction, can be seen adjacent to it. In addition, a floating sheerleg accompanied by a tugboat stands proudly nearby, ready to assist in this monumental task. Completing this scene is a header barge that adds further support to this ambitious endeavor. Laing Pipelines led the civil engineering work on this project alongside Entrepose and GTM from France. Meanwhile, Dredging and Construction Company partnered with Adriaan Volker of Rotterdam as they undertook dredging operations for this groundbreaking initiative. On June 16th, 1970 at precisely 12:30 pm local time, history was made as this colossal sea pipeline was launched into action. It took three hours to complete what would become one of Britain's largest offshore pipelines at that time. Published in July 1970 within Laing's monthly newsletter Team Spirit, this photograph serves as an enduring testament to human ingenuity and technological advancement in oil supply infrastructure during an era defined by progress and innovation.
