1930s Construction Crane Engineering Silhouette Geological Museum Natural History Museum Steel Frames

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of the Geological Museum, located on Exhibition Road in Kensington, Greater London. Taken during its construction in the 1930s, the image showcases the intricate steel frames that form the backbone of this architectural marvel. Designed by Sir Richard Allison and John Hatton Markham of H M Office of Works, this new building replaced the museum's previous location on Jermyn Street. The expertise of Banister, Walton and Co Ltd is evident in their impeccable manufacturing of these steel frames. Their craftsmanship ensures both strength and elegance for this grand structure. The silhouette-like figures visible against the sky are workers diligently erecting these frames with precision. A crane looms overhead as it assists them in their task. This snapshot not only highlights engineering prowess but also pays homage to those who labored tirelessly to bring this vision to life. Today, we know this magnificent edifice as part of the renowned Natural History Museum. However, through Stewart Bale Limited's lens capturing an era long gone, we can appreciate how it all began – with determination and meticulous attention to detail during its construction phase at Exhibition Road.
