Baptist Chapel JLP01_08_083018

Broadmead Baptist Church, Union Street, Broadmead, City of Bristol. An interior view of Broadmead Baptist Church, showing seating overlooked by a second floor gallery, with the timber-clad wing-shaped beams of the roof above.
The site of Broadmead Baptist Church had been connected to the non-conformist movement since 1640, and a chapel was built on the site in 1695. Demolition of the buildings of the former Broadmead Baptist Chapel began in January 1968. The site was to be redeveloped with nine shops on the ground floor and a new church with meeting rooms on the upper floors. The roof was constructed of wing-shaped prefabricated steel castellated beams, and was clad in timber. The new church was officially opened in 1969

1960s Church Interior Modern Architecture Religion Baptist Chapel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the interior of Broadmead Baptist Church in the City of Bristol. The image showcases a stunning view of the seating area, adorned with elegant wooden pews, overlooked by a second-floor gallery. Above, the eye is drawn to the remarkable timber-clad wing-shaped beams that form an intricate roof structure. The history of this site dates back to 1640 when it became associated with the non-conformist movement. In 1695, a chapel was erected on this very spot. However, as time passed and progress demanded change, demolition work began in January 1968 to make way for redevelopment. The vision for this new space included nine shops on the ground floor and a modern church with meeting rooms on upper levels. The most striking feature of this architectural marvel is undoubtedly its roof constructed using prefabricated steel castellated beams shaped like wings and covered in timber cladding. In 1969, after meticulous planning and construction efforts, Broadmead Baptist Church opened its doors once again as a place of worship and community gathering. This photograph serves as both a testament to modern architecture's ability to blend seamlessly with historical roots and an homage to religious devotion that has stood strong throughout centuries.
