New Kent Road, Newington, Southwark, Greater London. A 60-tonne Gargantua crane lowering the central section of deck into place during the construction of a footbridge over New Kent Road, Southwark.
The police closed the road from 8pm on the 12th of June 1973 until 5.30am on the 13th to allow Laings Southern Region division to build the footbridge. It linked the Heygate Estate of Jespersen flats to the north side of the road. The central box section concrete beam was 14m long and weighed 30 tonnes, the largest single unit produced by the John Laing Concrete factory in Andover at the time.
This photograph was used in the July 1973 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter

1970s Atmospheric Construction Dark Floodlit Footbridge Night Scene Weather

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous night scene in the heart of Southwark, Greater London. The image showcases the construction of a footbridge over New Kent Road, with a colossal 60-tonne Gargantua crane gracefully lowering the central section of deck into place. The significance of this project is evident as we learn that the police had to close the road for several hours to accommodate Laings Southern Region division's work. From 8pm on June 12th, 1973 until 5:30am on June 13th, commuters were rerouted to allow for the seamless assembly of this vital infrastructure. Connecting the Heygate Estate of Jespersen flats to the north side of New Kent Road, this footbridge served as an essential link between communities. The central box section concrete beam used in its construction was an impressive feat weighing a staggering 30 tonnes and measuring at an impressive length of 14 meters. The photograph itself exudes an atmospheric ambiance due to its floodlit setting amidst dark weather conditions. The wet surroundings add depth and texture to this historic snapshot from the past. Originally featured in Team Spirit, Laing company's newsletter in July 1973, this image serves as a testament to both engineering prowess and community connectivity during that era. Preserved by Historic England Archive, it stands as a reminder of our rich architectural heritage and human ingenuity.
