Whitley Bay Golf Course, Whitley Bay, NORTH TYNESIDE. A view of the restoration of Whitley Bay Golf Course following the completion of opencast mining on the site, showing a woman playing golf in the foreground.
John Laing and Son Ltd had started opencast mining operations in 1942 to meet wartime needs. The work was expanded by the company after the war and in 1948 opencast coal mining took place at Golf Course Opencast Coal Site in the Monkseaton area of Whitley Bay. By 1953 the mine was closed and the land was reclaimed. Historic England is the public body that champions and protects England's historic places. © Historic England Archive. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the remarkable transformation of Whitley Bay Golf Course, once marred by opencast mining, into a lush green oasis. The image showcases a woman gracefully swinging her golf club in the foreground, symbolizing the revival of this beloved sport amidst the restored landscape. In 1942, John Laing and Son Ltd initiated opencast mining operations at Whitley Bay Golf Course to meet wartime demands. Following World War II, the company expanded its efforts and in 1948 commenced opencast coal mining activities at Golf Course Opencast Coal Site in Monkseaton. However, by 1953, as coal extraction ceased, an inspiring process of land reclamation began. The photograph not only highlights the successful restoration but also emphasizes the importance of preserving recreational spaces for future generations. It serves as a testament to human resilience and dedication towards reclaiming nature's beauty from industrial scars. Beyond its historical significance lies a deeper narrative about women's participation in sports during that era. The presence of a female golfer prominently featured underscores their growing involvement in traditionally male-dominated activities. Moreover, this image sheds light on landscaping techniques employed during land reclamation projects post-mining operations. The meticulous attention to detail is evident through meticulously manicured fairways and strategically placed bunkers that enhance both aesthetics and playability. Ultimately, this evocative print encapsulates not just a moment frozen in time but also represents hope for environmental restoration and inclusivity within sporting pursuits.
