Berkeley Power Station from the air 1960 JLP01_08_058398
BERKELEY POWER STATION, BERKELEY, HAM AND STONE, STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. An aerial view from the south-east showing Berkeley Nuclear Power Station and its reactors during construction with the River Severn in the background.
Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom and one of the first generation of nuclear reactors in Britain. It had two Magnox reactors and was one of four stations located close to the mouth of the River Severn and the Bristol Channel. Laing were the civil engineers for the project with work commencing on 7th January 1957. The nuclear power station came into service in 1962 but has since been decommissioned following its closure in 1989. EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial print captures the Berkeley Power Station in all its grandeur during its construction in 1960. Located in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, this iconic nuclear power station was not only the first of its kind in the United Kingdom but also one of the pioneering reactors of its generation. The image showcases two Magnox reactors surrounded by a sprawling construction site, with the mighty River Severn elegantly flowing in the background. The significance of this historic moment is palpable as Laing, renowned civil engineers, commenced work on January 7th, 1957. Five years later, in 1962, Berkeley Nuclear Power Station began providing electricity to countless homes and businesses across Britain. However, after serving faithfully for several decades, it was eventually decommissioned following closure in 1989. This remarkable photograph allows us to marvel at both the engineering prowess required to build such a monumental structure and the natural beauty that surrounds it. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our ever-evolving relationship with energy production. Preserved by Historic England Archive and expertly captured by A© photographer Joh from above ground level, this image invites us to reflect upon an era when nuclear power stations were seen as symbols of progress and innovation. Today it stands as a reminder of our responsibility towards sustainable energy solutions for future generations.
