BERKELEY POWER STATION, BERKELEY, HAM AND STONE, STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. An aerial view from the south-west of the Berkeley Nuclear Power Station construction site, showing the reactors in the centre with the accommodation and facilities for the construction workers in the background.
Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom and one of the first generation of nuclear reactors in Britain. It had two Magnox reactors and was one of four stations located close to the mouth of the River Severn and the Bristol Channel. Laing were the civil engineers for the project with work commencing on 7th January 1957. The nuclear power station came into service in 1962 but has since been decommissioned following its closure in 1989

Construction Nuclear Power Station

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial print captures the Berkeley Power Station in all its grandeur and significance. Taken in 1960, it showcases the construction site of the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom. Located in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, this iconic landmark played a pivotal role in shaping Britain's energy landscape. The image reveals a panoramic view from the southwest, highlighting the reactors at the heart of the station. Standing tall and proud amidst their surroundings, they symbolize progress and innovation. In the background, we catch a glimpse of accommodation and facilities for the dedicated construction workers who tirelessly brought this ambitious project to life. Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was part of a pioneering generation of nuclear reactors situated near the River Severn and Bristol Channel. Laing served as civil engineers for this monumental endeavor that commenced on January 7th, 1957. After years of meticulous planning and hard work by countless individuals, it finally began operations in 1962. However, time has passed since then; today marks its decommissioning following closure in 1989. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as an enduring testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of technological advancement. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection under A©, this image allows us to reflect upon both our past achievements and future possibilities within nuclear power generation while appreciating the immense effort invested into constructing such an extraordinary facility.
