Industrial Windmill

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Polegate Windmill, also known as Ovenden's Mill, located in Park Croft, Willingdon and Jevington, East Sussex. Built in 1817, this four-storey brick tower mill stands tall with its domed cap elegantly winded by a fantail. As you gaze upon it, you can't help but be mesmerized by its timeless beauty. With a stage at first floor level and a height of 47 feet, Polegate Windmill is an impressive structure that has stood the test of time. Its four Patent sails or sweeps gracefully adorn the cast iron wind shaft while the wooden Brake Wheel adds to its rustic charm. This magnificent mill once powered two pairs of overdrift millstones and even had a third pair driven underdrift by an auxiliary engine. The photo captures the windmill from a westward perspective, offering us a general view that allows us to appreciate its grandeur against the backdrop of nature's splendor. The surrounding landscape seems to pay homage to this industrial marvel as it proudly stands amidst lush greenery. Chris Redgrave skillfully captured this moment in history through his lens for Historic England. His attention to detail brings out every intricate feature of Polegate Windmill - from its sturdy construction to its architectural finesse. As we admire this remarkable image, let us reflect on how such structures have shaped our past and continue to inspire awe today. The Polegate Windmill serves as both a testament to human ingenuity and an enduring symbol of East Sussex's rich heritage.
