BULL SAND FORT, Humber Estuary. Aerial view. Standing one and a half miles from shore off Spurn Head on a submerged sandbank, it stands 18 metres high and 25metres in diameter. Bull Sand Fort and its twin Haile Sand Fort were built in 1914 to protect the mouth of the Humber from enemy attack. They were completed just as the First World War broke out. They were also used in the Second World War as anti-aircraft and anti-submarine defences

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the majestic Bull Sand Fort, standing proudly in the Humber Estuary. Located one and a half miles from shore off Spurn Head, this remarkable structure sits atop a submerged sandbank, defying the elements. With its impressive height of 18 metres and diameter of 25 metres, it is an imposing sight to behold. Built in 1914 as a defensive measure against potential enemy attacks on the mouth of the Humber, Bull Sand Fort holds great historical significance. Alongside its twin counterpart Haile Sand Fort, construction was completed just as the First World War erupted. These forts played crucial roles during both world wars - serving as anti-aircraft and anti-submarine defenses. Jane Stone's expertly captured print showcases not only the fort's architectural beauty but also highlights its strategic location amidst vast waters. The image evokes a sense of awe at mankind's ability to construct such formidable structures in challenging environments. As we gaze upon this photograph, let us reflect on the resilience and ingenuity displayed by those who built and manned these forts throughout history. Their unwavering dedication to protecting their homeland serves as a reminder of our shared duty to safeguard our nations' security even today.
