Steep Holm, Bristol Channel. Steep Holme is a small island in the Bristol Channel, five miles off Weston-super-Mare. Despite this, it was settled throughout history. Its strategic military importance was recognised in the 19th century, and several gun emplacements can be seen around the cliffs. Photographed by Jim Hancock in July 1969
