EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by H. Bedford Lemere in 1890, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Tower of London. The image showcases the breathtaking view of the Lanthorn Tower and the White Tower, two of the most iconic structures within the historic fortress. The Lanthorn Tower, with its distinctive conical roof and ornate decorations, stands proudly on the right side of the image, while the White Tower, the oldest part of the Tower of London, dominates the left. The tranquil Thames River flows gently in the foreground, reflecting the towering structures and adding to the serene ambiance of the scene. The river bank is adorned with an impressive array of cannon, a testament to the Tower's long and storied history as a fortress and a symbol of power. The Norman-style architecture of the Tower of London, with its thick walls, battlements, and towering towers, transports us back in time to the medieval era. The Tower has served many roles throughout history, including a royal palace, a prison, and even a menagerie. This photograph, taken over a century ago by H. Bedford Lemere, provides us with a unique perspective of the Tower of London, allowing us to appreciate its grandeur and historical significance. The image invites us to imagine the stories and tales that these ancient walls have witnessed throughout the centuries.
