1960s Grandstand Laing Spirit People Recreation Spectators Sport Stadium Athletics Track

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time at the annual Laing Sports Day held at Copthall Stadium in Hendon, Greater London. The year was 1966, and men from various regions had gathered to compete in an array of athletic events on this historic day. As the camera lens focuses on the starting line of a track event, we see these determined athletes poised for action, their anticipation palpable. Beyond the athletes, we catch a glimpse of the grandstands filled with enthusiastic spectators eagerly awaiting the commencement of this thrilling competition. Their presence adds an electric energy to the atmosphere as they cheer on their favorite participants. The significance of this particular sports day lies not only in its location but also in its expansion from previous years. For the first time ever, Copthall Stadium hosted this prestigious event instead of Laing Sports Ground at Elstree. This change allowed competitors from Scotland to Carlisle to partake in these exhilarating festivities. But it wasn't just about fierce competition; fun and camaraderie were also integral parts of this memorable day. A lively funfair provided entertainment for all ages while a marching band added rhythm and spirit to every step taken by both young and old alike. As dusk settled upon Copthall Stadium, participants and spectators alike indulged in a delicious barbecue feast before transitioning into an evening filled with socializing and celebration - truly embodying that unique "Laing spirit". This remarkable photograph is not just a testament to athleticism or recreation
