EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure joy and excitement at the annual Laing Sports Day held at Copthall Stadium in 1966. A group of young girls, their faces beaming with anticipation, are lined up at the start of a skipping race. The image perfectly encapsulates the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie that filled the air that day. In the background, spectators can be seen seated in a grandstand, eagerly watching as these young athletes showcase their skipping skills. Beyond them lies an expansive stadium, serving as a testament to the magnitude of this event. The Laing Sports Day was not just about athletics; it was an occasion for families to come together and enjoy a day filled with fun activities. The festivities included a marching band, sports competitions for children, and even a vibrant funfair. This particular year marked a significant change in venue from Elstree to Hendon's Copthall Stadium. Competitors from various regional offices and sites across Scotland and Carlisle traveled to participate in this memorable event. After all the sporting events concluded, participants gathered for an evening barbecue where they could unwind and socialize. It is evident from this photograph that memories were made that would last a lifetime. Thanks to Historic England Archive's preservation efforts, we can now relish this snapshot from history—a testament to childhood innocence, community spirit, and the power of sport bringing people together.
