1960s Grandstand Laing Spirit People Recreation Spectators Sport Stadium Novelty Start Line

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the excitement and camaraderie of a wheelbarrow race at the annual Laing Sports Day held at Copthall Stadium in Hendon, Greater London. The image showcases men and women eagerly lined up at the starting line, ready to push their wheelbarrows towards victory. Taken in 1966, this event marked a significant change as it was the first time that the sports day had been hosted at Copthall Stadium instead of its usual location at Elstree's Laing Sports Ground. Participants from various regional offices and sites, including those from Scotland and Carlisle, gathered to compete in athletics and football competitions. The atmosphere was electric as spectators filled the grandstand, cheering on their favorite teams with anticipation. This photograph not only captures a moment of intense competition but also reflects the spirit of unity amongst Laing employees. Beyond just sports events, this special day offered much more for attendees. A funfair added an element of amusement while a marching band provided lively entertainment throughout. Children were not left out either; they participated in their own sports competitions. After all the sporting activities concluded, everyone came together for a delightful barbecue followed by an evening filled with socializing. This print serves as a timeless reminder of both competitive spirit and community bonding during this memorable occasion captured by Historic England Archive photographer Joh
