Vermail House PLA01_02_64
Paradox nightclub, Ormskirk Road, Aintree, Aintree Village, Sefton, Merseyside. The clock tower of Vermail House, formerly the headquarters of Vernons Football Pools, in use as the Paradox nightclub.
Vermail House was thought to be the first purpose-built offices by a pools company in Britain. Vernons was one of the largest football pools companies. It was acquired by Ladbrokes in 1989. Vermail House became a night club known as Paradox in the 1990s. In the mid 2000s the majority of the building was demolished, though the clock tower remained. This was also cleared in around 2012 ahead of redevelopment of the site as a retail unit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Vermail House, once the prestigious headquarters of Vernons Football Pools in Aintree Village, Merseyside. Standing tall and proud is the magnificent clock tower, a symbol of an era when football pools were at their peak. Vermail House holds historical significance as it was believed to be the first purpose-built offices by a pools company in Britain. Vernons Football Pools was renowned as one of the largest companies in this industry until its acquisition by Ladbrokes in 1989. However, even after its transformation into a nightclub named Paradox during the 1990s, Vermail House retained its grandeur. Sadly, over time, most parts of this architectural gem were demolished in the mid-2000s to make way for redevelopment plans. The clock tower itself stood tall amidst these changes until around 2012 when it too had to give way for further development on-site. This photograph not only captures the beauty and elegance of Vermail House but also serves as a reminder of its rich sporting history and cultural significance within Merseyside. Its art deco design elements are truly remarkable while serving as a testament to an era gone by.
